Despite getting tremendous reviews, Marvel Studios' Agent Carter limited series didn't do spectacularly well when it aired earlier this year - but evidently ABC is still pretty keen on it. We know this because reports have come in confirming that the network will be bringing the show back for a second season.
In a write-up about multiple other ABC programs getting renewed - including titles like Off The Boat and Galavant - The Wrap has confirmed that Marvel Studios will be working on at least a few more episodes of the period spy show starring Hayley Atwell. Unfortunately, that's really all of the information that we have for now, as we don't know at this point when Agent Carter Season 2 might go into production or when ABC plans on releasing the episodes.
Airing earlier this year during the winter hiatus for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the first season of the series centered on Peggy Carter's days after the end of World War II, but before helping Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) found the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. The eight episode season followed her as she both dealt with extreme sexism working for the Scientific Strategic Reserve (S.S.R.), and helped Stark recover weapons of mass destruction stolen from his safe. In addition to Atwell and Cooper, the show also starred James D'Arcy, Chad Michael Murray, and Enver Gjokaj - though at this point it's obviously too early to say who will be coming back from that list.
What will also be interesting to follow is the involvement of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely with the second season of Agent Carter. The two men, who previously worked with Marvel Studios writing the scripts for Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, were credited as creators of Agent Carter in its first season, but it will be interesting to see if their upcoming schedule will allow them to return to the show in any capacity. Not only have they penned the script for Captain America: Civil War - which just began production today in Atlanta, Georgia - but they have also been officially hired by Marvel to write the screenplays for both The Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 and Part 2. Given these big screen gigs, it's possible that Markus and McFeely could wind up being too busy to be involved with Agent Carter Season 2. The involvement of showrunners Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas, and Chris Dingess is also unclear at this time.
Given where Season 1 left things, where would you like to see the action go in Agent Carter's second season? Do you think they'll stay in the pre-S.H.I.E.L.D. period, or do you think the narrative will skip forward a few years and find Peggy Carter and Howard Stark working together to make the world a better place?
