What happened to Simmons?
Spoilers for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 finale ahead!
Last night, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wrapped up its second season with the two-part finale “S.O.S.” Several storylines addressed, including the S.H.I.E.L.D./Inhuman war and Ward’s torrid affair with Agent 33, but in traditional Marvel fashion, they just couldn’t let viewers go without a cliffhanger. In the final minutes of the finale, Fitz and Simmons were studying the mysterious Kree Stone that was discovered over 100 years ago and has been in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s custody for decades. After asking Simmons out on a dinner date, Fitz left the room awkwardly, but Simmons promptly noticed that he had accidentally caused the glass case encasing the stone to open. Before she could shut it, the stone morphed into its liquid form, seizing the unsuspecting Simmons and swallowing her up. The good news? She's definitely not dead.
This was an unexpected and bizarre way to conclude Season 2, and now fans are left wondering what’s happened to the actress. We already know actress Elizabeth Henstridge has signed on for Season 3, fans can take comfort knowing she hasn’t been killed off, but her predicament is nonetheless concerning. Henstridge told EWthat while she originally suspected that the stone taking Simmons might have something to do with her gaining superpowers (similar to the mist that gives Inhumans powers), now she has several other theories on her mind.I think I’m somewhere. I think it transports me somewhere. We’ve had so many theories on set. ‘Maybe she can go back in time and kill Ward,’ or ‘Maybe she goes back in time and for whatever reason Fitz doesn’t know who she is and no one knows who she is,’ or ‘Maybe she goes invisible and no one can see her,’ or ‘What if she’s just trapped inside the rock?’ That would be terrible. There have been so many theories, but I think it’s a transportation device.
If Henstridge’s transportation theory is true, the question now is where she’s been taken to. Has she simply been dropped off at another location on Earth, or will it be somewhere else, like another planet or alternate dimension? Of course, transportation is only one option. Another possibility is that the stone has a consciousness of its own, and when it eventually spits Simmons out, it will somehow control her for its own purposes. Frankly, it’s hard to speculate on what happened to Simmons since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. hasn't explained what the stone’s deal is.
The stone, first seen in the episode “Scars,” was created by the Kree to destroy the humans they experimented on, a.k.a. the Inhumans’ ancestors. Obviously this wasn’t successful, given that Inhumans are spread out across the world, but the stone is lethal to their kind if it is put in the wrong hands. Regardless, considering what it did to Simmons, it looks like it’s dangerous to regular humans as well. Mack was wise to make sure that thing stayed locked up, but a clumsy accident has resulted in one of Coulson’s most prized agents being absorbed, and who knows what she’ll be like when she returns?
Simmons’ fate, and hopefully what exactly the stone does will be revealed when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for Season 3 this fall on ABC.\
An Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Character Will Be Around A Lot More During Season 3 Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
ended Season 2 less than three weeks ago, but planning has already begun for Season 3. While the plot remains a mystery, all of the main players are expected to return for the show’s third outing, including Adrianne Palicki’s Bobbi Morse and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter, who were originally supposed to star in the now-scrapped spinoff. When the show comes back in the fall, they’ll be joined by a familiar face. After being featured as a recurring character during Season 2, fans are going to be seeing a lot more of the Inhuman Lincoln Campbell.
Deadline is reporting that actor Luke Mitchell has been upgraded to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s main cast for Season 3. No details were provided on how he will fit into the storyline next season, but as a series regular, expect plenty of interaction between Phil Coulson and the other agents. This will be Mitchell’s second lead role in an American TV series. He previously starred in The CW’s short-lived series The Tomorrow People, where his character John Young had a range of psionic abilities.
Season 2 spoilers ahead. Lincoln was introduced in the Season 2 episode “Afterlife” as Skye’s guide in the same-named community where many Inhumans resided, and helped her to understand her transformation. After undergoing Terrigenesis at a young age, he obtained the power to manipulate electricity. As the season went on, Lincoln became Skye’s closest Inhuman confidant and watched over her. Originally siding with Skye’s mother Jiaying and the teleporter Gordon during the brief war with S.H.I.E.L.D., Lincoln switched sides in the Season 2 finale“S.O.S.” and helped Skye and the rest of Coulson’s team prevent Jiaying and her Inhuman supporters from wiping out all humans.
By the end of “S.O.S.,” Skye (whose real name is Daisy Johnson) talked with Coulson about forming a S.H.I.E.L.D. team of super powered people under the codename “Caterpillars.” Following in the footsteps of the comic book counterpart, this team looks like it will be the MCU version of the Secret Warriors. No other candidates for the team were mentioned, but it’s a good bet that Skye will recruit Lincoln. Not only will his electricity powers pack a major punch against any enemies they face, his presence also allows for more exploration of the Inhumans, since he has more familiarity with them than Skye does. This could also lead to more set-up for the 2019 Inhumans film.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 will premiere sometime this fall.
Avengers 2 Will Have A Big Effect On Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been remarkably effective at tying Marvel’s movie franchises in with the TV series. Keeping that in mind, it’s not a great shock to learn that the ABC drama will tie in with the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, but quite frankly, we’re pleased to hear it anyway. This week, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jed Whedon teased that the movie will indeed tie in with the larger storyline going on in the TV show.
“You should expect something. The Avengers is the big tent that all the franchises play under. Obviously, we’re included in that.”
Obviously, that doesn’t give us a whole lot of specifics, but we do also know that the tie-in won’t be quite as big as the mind-blowing Hydra stuff that affected S.H.I.E.L.D.after Captain America: The Winter Soldier hit theaters. Other executive producer Mauriss Tancharoen also told EW that the ripple effects will be much smaller this time around. Still, they will be present, and that’s something to look forward to.
While DC Entertainment has made a big to-do about keeping its film and TV universes separate, Marvel is all for as much crossover as possible. We’ve seen multiple characters cross over between the movies and the shows, including people like Lady Sif, but probably the most prominent of these examples is the Captain America: The Winter Soldier Hydra infiltration stuff, which has ended up having a major effect on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. In fact, Season 2 has followed Agent Coulson and his team attempting to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. after its ultimate collapse, and fans are still seeing the effects of the tie-in.
This time the crossover stuff sounds like it will be a little smaller scale, so it could be similar to how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. reacted with a cleanup after Thor: The Dark World did its thing. Obviously, Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn’t even hit theaters until May—which is towards the end of the TV season, so it’s possible the movie won’t even have to do with the show until it returns for Season 3—and that’s if ABC signs on for another season next fall.
In the meantime, there are plenty of good reasons to watch S.H.I.E.L.D. Tonight’s explosive midseason finale is expected to be one to watch. You can catch the new episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. over at ABC at 9 p.m. ET.
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Is Bringing In A Bunch Of New Characters
After defeating Jailing and her Inhuman followers in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Season 2 finale, Phil Coulson and Skye began formulating a plan to put together a team of superpowered people to help the spy organization protect the planet. In a world where more people with special abilities are coming out of the woodwork, you need operatives just as special to deal with unique threats. There haven’t been any revelations on what to expect from this initiative since Season 2 concluded in May, but after some sly teases from series star Clark Gregg, fans now know what this team will be called: the Secret Warriors.
Variety has revealed that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 will introduce characters inspired by the Secret Warriors group from the comics. This special team will be comprised of people from Coulson’s “Caterpillar initiative” from across the world, and because they have stayed below the radar, they will be less likely to be compromised by the bad guys. However, S.H.I.E.L.D. soon finds out that they’re not the only ones looking for the new Inhumans. The article also included Season 3’s new promotional poster, with the show’’s logo getting the Secret Warriors stamp of approval.
The Secret Warriors, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, were introduced in 2008 as a team put together by Nick Fury’s protégé Daisy Johnson, a.k.a. Quake, to combat the invading Skull army during Secret Invasion. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans will remember that Skye is the MCU’s version of Daisy (powersand all), so to have her leading this team outside the comics is appropriate and faithful to the source material. Other members from the comic book team included young heroes Phobos, Druid, Slingshot, Hellfire, Stonewall and Gateway, but that doesn’t mean that the TV team will have the same lineup.
One good bet on who we’ll see joining the MCU’s Secret Warriors is Lincoln Campbell, played by recently promoted Luke Mitchell, who manipulates electricity and served as Skye’s guide in the Inhuman community Afterlife. There’s also the possibility that this version of the Secret Warriors might feature other people with abilities besides just Inhumans. Although he may not end up being a full-time member, I’d like to see Deathlok go on a few missions with them.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 will premiere on September 29 at 9 p.m. EST on ABC
